Fast food can cause depression

Eating fast food can make you depressed, doctors have warned. Those who regularly eat high-fat foods, processed meals, desserts and sweets are almost 60 per cent more likely to suffer depression than those who choose fruit, vegetables and fish. Researchers claim their study is the first to investigate the link between overall diet and mental health, rather than the effects of individual foods.

A balanced diet is important to keep the body and mind healthy. Food is a strong link to mental health, and while certain types of food help to fight depression and anxiety, there are also foods that are the cause of these mental illnesses.

There are several links to food and depression. Food affects everyone differently. While some foods are natural mood boosters, some foods--if eaten in excess--can cause depression and anxiety. Another link from food to depression is food allergies. Often, these mental illnesses can be cured simply by avoiding certain foods all together. There are several types of foods that can cause you to feel depressed and anxious. Foods high in protein yet low in fat and cholesterol can block the flow of serotonin to the brain. Foods that cause constipation and dump toxins into the liver will also result in depression. Finally, foods with a high caffeine content can cause insomnia and a lack of sleep, which can further lead to depression. Foods that can cause a lower level of serotonin in the brain are apples, nuts, avocados, peas, horse meat, eggs, milk and salmon. These foods will block serotonin levels and create a chemical imbalance in the brain. Highly caffeinated foods, such as coffee and tea, can cause insomnia. This can lead to anxiety, irritability and depression over a long period of time. Foods that are heavily processed and high in sodium, such as fast food, canned food and pre-packaged dehydrated foods, can cause the liver and colon to dump toxins continually back into the body's system.

Depression is a condition that basically involves sadness, hopelessness, pessimism, in addition to many other unpleasant feelings and thoughts one can go through or feel. Nevertheless, these feeling can become worse as we face emotional battles during trying times in our lives.

Trouble sleeping and chronic tiredness are also some of the commonly experienced problems by depressed people.
